Blurrrrb!
4/1/04 0:12 PST | [PSOF]Reaper
Well, another year has passed and we are back on this great day. April 1st, All Fools Day. I wonder what games we may see announced today... :) For anyone who doesn't know what All Fools Day is, or even how it started, heres todays Blurrrrb!
April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day occurs annually on April 1. The day is generally observed by playing a practical joke on a "victim" who soon becomes known as an April Fool. This custom is thought to have started in France during the 16th century but the British are credited with bringing it to the United States.
The commonly accepted origin of April Fool's Day involves changes in the calendar. At one time, the New Year celebration began on March 25 and ended on April 1. However, in 1582, King Charles IX adopted the Gregorian calendar and accepted the beginning of the new year as January 1. Those who refused to acknowledge the new date or simply forgot received foolish gifts and invitations to nonexistent parties.
So its true, you can blame us Brits for all the terrible practical jokes people may play on you today, please restrain the hate mail to me!
Pun of the Day:
He sold large bullets and acted like a real big shot.

Mod: B.A.R.D 1.3 Released
3/29/04 9:38 PST | [PSOF]Reaper
Here it is - B.A.R.D 1.3! BARD strives to pack in as many of your favourite requested features, leave out the crap you don't want, let you enable only the features that you want, and still remain under 5 megabytes. No flashy gimmicks, no stupid catchphrases, no false advertising.
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/planetsoldieroffortune/arkanis/sof2mpbard
If people are still stumped as to what B.A.R.D offers over standard Soldier Of Fortune 2 1.03, a comparison chart which compares all of the key features of SOF2 1.03 and B.A.R.D 1.3 can be found on the B.A.R.D website: http://www.planetsoldier.com/arkanis/bard/comparison.htm
Version v 1.3 Beta / v 1.3

- Minor fixes and improvements
This may be the last revision of B.A.R.D I release, although I am still taking bug feedback incase I decide to release one or two more small revisions to fix bugs etc. It is still bugging me I could not implement the complete admin system I wanted, I was forced to leave much of it out, including the menus due to not being able to get a couple features working.
Note: Do not confuse this with the beta version of 1.3, which is different to the official 1.3. This version also comes with the female skin pack included as default. To disable the female team skins run the 'FemaleTeamSkins.exe', or rename the '_zfemales.pk3' file to '_zfemales.xxx'. You may have to enable/disable the female skins depending on the server you are playing on.

Mailbag!
3/21/04 1:53 PST | [PSOF]Reaper
The Mailbag for the past 4 months has focused on your ideas for SoF3. We are still getting a lot of ideas submitted to us. If you would like to submit your own suggestions then mail them to PlanetSoldiers Mailbag. Heres your taster!
- Ragdoll physics that react to the hit locations and the power
of weapons properly.
- Realistic AI (I keep getting shot at in columbia when I'm hidden
in the bushes... AI should be based off vision and sound cones
so they don't always know where you are.)
- Realistic damage to everything ( Grenades take chunks out of
buildings, blow parts off of people, point blank shots doing more
damage than ranged ones.)
- Realistic weapons and combat (If I'm carrying two pistols, and
one runs out of ammo long before the other, I'm not going to stop
shooting and reload until both guns are empty.)
- Realistic fluid physics (Blood splatters onto a wall and oozes
down.)
- Realistic materials (cloth waves in the wind, wood splinters
and burns regardless of what its used for.)
- Realistic lighting and shadows.
- More realistic hitzones and gore (Shooting holes through people,
shooting them in half, Limbs that when blown away don't look like
a group of triangles with a gore texture. Enemies that respond
better to where they're hit.)
- NPCs that when knocked down, don't die, they get back up.
- Longer lasting enemies (That isn't to say, they should survive
multiple shotgun blasts to the head. But if you blow off their
legs, they shouldn't just die, they should scream for help and
crawl for saftey until they bleed out or get shot to death, that
sorta thing.)
- NPC's that care. (If two guys are talking, and you shoot one
in the throat, his buddy will try to help him if he can't see
you and if he does, he'll shoot at you AND pull his friend to
saftey.)
- NPC's that surrender if their morale drops too low. (saving
you from needing to kill people.)
- More uses for the knife (Interrogation, field surgery?, Distraction
"Where the fu** did this come from?")
- More detailed models (People looked for the most part like they
were printed out of a mold in SoF2.)
- Knocking people out.
- No Limits on Saving
- Higher Res textures.
- Better lip syncing.
- A music player (like in Unreal Tournament 2003)
- A USEFUL form of L.A.M. for pistols and other weapons.
- Better Night Vision and Thermal Vision.
- Use of the Half Life 2 Engine with an upgrade ghoul engine.
- The ability to fire when prone in single and multiplayer.
- Swords.
- More weapon accessories and weapons. (Multiple ammo types, scopes,
supressors, extended magazines, air tasers, an "if they're
using it, I can use it" system.)
- Better ladder coding (Any idea how hard it is to climb down
them in this game?)
- The ability to throw grenades back at AI.
- Shellshock effect for nearby explosions (like in Call of Duty).
- Vehicles
- Being able to stumble upon conversations that give you more
information (information that actualy gives you bonus' later on
in the game such as alternate routes, patrol routes, etc.)
- Helpful teamate NPCs
- Missions that reward use of stealth beyond the use of shooting
the Fu** out of people.
- More Gadgets from The Shops R&D division
- Voice chat, and recognition for NPCs (Screaming into a mic to
"GET DOWN!" could cause Allies sprawling for cover or
intimidate enemies.)
- Mutltiple HUD variations
- Deus Ex, Devastation, XIII style interaction (Hitting people
with ashtrays, throwing forks and even corpse peices.)
- Toolkit released with the game.
-Physics based environment (Like in Unreal II. If someone throws
a smoke grenade, and I throw an frag grenade into the cloud, I
want to see the cloud be blown away by the grenades air blast.)
- More effective distraction devices (Flash bangs, throwing stones,
etc.)
- A better Random Mission Generator
- Akimbo weapons in Multiplayer
- Better and more extensive pre-release testing
- No more god damn dogs (It seems the ones in SoF2 were exactly
like those in SoF)
Check out the SoF3 Mailbag!

Arkanis Retires
3/21/04 1:26 PST | [PSOF]Reaper
After almost two years modding and being a member of the Soldier Of Fortune 2 community in some capacity, I have decided that it is time to move on to new and more exciting opportunities. During those two years, I have enjoyed my time in the Soldier Of Fortune 2 community, and met a lot of nice, interesting people along the way.
Why am I leaving? To be honest, I just do not feel excited, passionate, or motivated enough to continue making mods for Soldier Of Fortune 2. I am currently in the process of planning a large-scale mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, or possibly Half Life 2. I hope that in the future I come across some of the old Soldier Of Fortune 2 stalwarts, and we can play one of my new mods.
As far as B.A.R.D is concerned, I will try and get one last version out in the next week, but I cannot guarantee this. I will continue to update this site with new information for some time to come, so don't worry.
